Aim of Event In line with the aim of the SPIDER network
“to develop a body of work re-evaluating the role of science
in disaster management”, Coventry University’s leg intends
to continue the exploration of the interface between ‘hard scientific’
and ‘social scientific’ approaches to the practice of
disaster management. The sessions are intended to identify generic
and “volcanic hazard” specific factors that help develop
co-operative partnerships between scientists and other groups working
within the field. This one day event will bring academics from the
physical and social sciences together with practitioners and policy
makers in disaster management to discuss how the scientific research
findings can be more effectively transferred to stakeholders.
In a friendly and informal atmosphere we will explore through keynote
presentations, case studies and extended discussion how scientific
knowledge is and should be disseminated effectively to key stakeholder
groups; notably disaster management practitioners and the public.
Although the focus of the SPIDER seminar series is volcanic hazards
and risk this event looks to learn lessons from other natural hazards
– landslides and those associated with climate change. There
will be a wine reception in the Deanery immediately following the
meeting at 4:00pm
Poster Session
There will be a dedicated poster session on the 30th March and a chance
to view posters submitted. The poster session is open to all: Practitioners,

unable to attend – please consider entering a poster.
